IBM and Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek company reported a collaboration aimed at developing a chipset for new wireless technology IBM, which is designed to transfer large amounts of data, such as HD-video, DVD recorders and other multimedia data. A distinctive feature of novelty is that it focuses on work not with computers, but with the home or office electronics - DVD- players, portable devices and TVs.
A new technology called mmWave (millimeter wave) and it works much faster than the common WiFi technology. At IBM, said that the company - electronics manufacturers have already supported the development and to create a HD- ready TVs, consoles, DVD-players and computer interfaces with the full support mmWave.
In today's IBM is the task of improving radio coverage mmWave, as well as to improve the speed performance of the system. The first demonstration of the system was held last year in the United States when using the experimental chip was transferred to uncompressed video in HD-quality real-time.
It is expected that the first chips mmWave will be created on the basis of 65- nm technology, which will serve as the basis for the silicon- germanium base. Analysts say the technology mmWave generally quite good, but to promote it, IBM and MediaTek have to compete with WiFi and WiMax, for which there are giants such as Intel, Nokia, Motorola and others.
Technical details of the new technology the company has not officially published.
